what i wore {its a whole lot}

a whole lot of what i wore this week.  in the PNW its getting dark awfully early and with daylight savings this week, its gonna get worse.  I need to start taking my outfit pictures a lot earlier in the day, its a lotta low light today folks.

first a repeat.  I got this shirt last fall and was so excited to wear it again this fall.  it's one of those shirts in my closet that just makes me happy.  I bought it right before a buyer meeting that I was kind of nervous about - I needed a power shirt to give me a little boost.  you know.

shirt - bellatrix, nordstrom
jeans - citizens for humanity
earrings - Lucia K. Tag
shoes - dolce vita

and again.

our weather has gotten quite soggy {not superstorm sandy soggy but reallllly wet} and consequently my hair has gone quite poodle.  I love how many great scarves and headbands and hats there are to hide and tame my crazy curls.  the particular headband is from an accidental sweater felting.  it was my favorite sweater about five years ago - I threw it in the wash and dryer,  at the time not knowing what a wool sweater would do.  such a bummer when it came out sized for a 6yr old.  I have made a pillow and a headband and bootcuffs from it.

shirt - bellatrix, nordstrom
jeans - seven for all mankind
headband - made me me
shoes - dolce vita
earrings - Lucia K. Taylor {bad lighting can't barely see them}

outfit #3 - post game day.  I had to post this one because I'm just so dang proud of my alma mater this week.  thank you for beating a top 10 ranked team.  we won't stay down for long.

 sweatshirt - the dawg den
jeans - paige denim, nordstrom rack
earrings - Lucia K Tag

 outfit #4 - and now I'm getting a little electric.  fell in love with these cobalt cords.  but they are bright.  and this is my attempt at a buttoned up collar.  all of a sudden I am into the tight collar and necklaces.

 this necklace is one of my best.  and its not longer available through our website, but amazon has got it.  and its on sale for a smoking deal.

sweater - zara.com
shirt - banana republic {old}
jeans - j brand, nordstrom rack
necklace - Lucia K. Ginger
nails - MAC vintage vamp

DIY quickie {a sweater reinvented}

so often times I get this idea in my head of what I want.  but I can't find it.  so I end up re-working items in the back of my closet to make them more what I'm craving.  not always the best outcome, but sometimes its a hit.

I have been on the hunt for that perfect fall vest.  {why am I the only one who looks ridiculous in faux fur vests.  then there was this perfect, if not way too pricey, madewell.com vest.  waited too long and its gone.  shoot}

now take this sweater.  not bad, but not great.

I got it for maybe 10$ at the Gap a long time ago.  you know when they have those awesome sales racks every so often.  before...

its comfy cozy, but not all that flattering.  so I got the urge to take the sleeves off, and see what happens.

this was very simple because this sweater has a separate thread connecting the seam.  so the sweater itself was not going to unravel when the seam was cut.

and 10 minutes later.  the vest reinvented.  I'm happy with the update.  until I can find that perfect cozy vest for fall this will definitely do.  after...

shirt - ae.com
jeans - citizens for humanity
shoes - Dolce vita

and now I have two fabulous knitted sleeves to repurpose...perhaps a winter headband, or boot cuffs.  stay tuned.

happy monday.  praying for all the east coasters tonight.

kirsty

what i wore {black & white and green all over}

I was looking the other day and somehow I have accumulated at least 4 green dresses in my wardrobe.  its kind of silly.

outfit #1 - I wore this to an engagement party for a favorite couple of me and my husband's.  this dress was a 10$ score at H&M.  at a recent Nordstrom fashion show I fell in love with a this green dress {it really was soooo much cuter on the runway} but with a price tag of 375$ it definitely was not happening.  it has a slight resemblance don't you think?

this was a dress that couldn't be worn with kiddos around.  that would quickly become inappropriate because I could really only raise my hands this much.  but it was perfect for standing around chatting with friends sipping on a great drink {was introduced to a moscow mule, love at first sip} and yummy bites.

I call this the "poddy pose".  right?  you can't even see my shoes but they are these great chocolate brown booties with the slightest platform.

and my earrings - gold chain painted slightly white.  they are strung in a long fringe look.  but its in the details - small delicate gold filagree beads along the top and an asymmetrical wrapped gold-filled wire that was inspired by a belt and buckle.  I have been reaching for them whether I am dressy or more casual.  they give a great modern twist to a classic gold look.

dress - H&M
belt - Zara.com
tights - H&M {such a wonderful place for great inexpensive tights}
shoes - Me too.

 do you see why I had to be on my best behavior?  the back was a bit risky for me...

outfit #2 - more green, and some stripes.  plus pink lips.  fun?  it might be a little dr. suess-esque but I dig it.  btw - this was the day after the above party.  if my hair is still working, I just let it be.  choose your battles.

you know when you find a basic shirt and love it so much you buy it in multiple colors?  well I had it in 3 colors then to my surprise a year later it showed up in stripes.

can you see my earrings?   I forgot to do a closeup.  I found these great brown coppery fresh water pearls.  they are just a few steps away from goddy.  is that a word?  but with gold filagrees they just kind of sing to me.   especially with my new green theme.

sweater - H&M
shirt - H&M
jeggings - joe jeans, anthropologie
boots - steve madden {similar}
earrings - Lucia K. jewelry trial run possible holiday addition.

happy wednesday.

what i wore {fluffy and flannel}

A big blanket on my back.  I love it.  this is a super cozy sweater that I feel somehow is still flattering.  that makes me happy.  a MOPS morning and then a hectic work afternoon.

my undershirt is so soft.  do you know Splendid clothing?  its always great comfort and fit, mostly basics but some flair.  its a little bit of an investment, but you can often find it at Nordstrom Rack.

yep.  same bottom combo as last week.  and maybe a few times in between.  if it works I kind of just go with it for a while.

I spotted this pearl and sequin vintage trim and had to do something with it.  I added it to a thick piece of raw edged dark leather.  then a snap and now its a bracelet.  I love the mix of tough leather with the sweet, old-fashioned, and a little bit fancy trim.  we will see how it holds up {before I can think of selling it on the site}.  love the test phase.

sweater - the clothing co, shopruche.com {from last year}
white shirt - splendid
jeans - J brand
boot socks - old
boots - frye (on sale here!)
earrings - Lucia K. Jewelry
bracelets - Lucia K. Jewelry

***
Warning:  Sadly, there are dishonest websites using a photo of me in this sweater, and selling knockoffs.  Even though it is my picture, they do not have permission, and I can not validate these sites or the quality of the product.  If my picture is used to advertise this sweater, I would recommend not purchasing from that website!

so many of you have been asking, the sweater above isn't available anymore.  Here are 3 very similar and in my opinion just as fabulous.  Best part, they are an additional 40% off with code TAGTIME

what i wore {light layers}

Seattle has been having the most amazing best fall weather I can remember.  this is about as layered as we need to be right now.  and its october.  golden sunshine.

this shirt has fun button detail up the back.  notice the tag shining through, thankfully that was noticed and removed before I left the house.  goodness.

shirt - Daniel Rainn, Nordstrom Rack
jeans - J brand
boot socks - old ones.
boots - frye

short and sweet today.  hope you all are enjoying October.

what i wore {exposed}

this is why I love these earrings.

totally {sort of} exposed.  even in my closest-to-sweats-without-being-sweats clothes, no makeup, hair pulled back... put them on, and they just give you that needed boost.  check them out for yourself.

jacket - madewell
tank - anthro
jeans - 7 for all mankind {patched twice on my backside folks}
flip flops - rainbows
all very old.

outfit #2 a very fun night out for me.  my sis-n-law and I attended the Nordstrom 2012 fall trends fashion show.  this was my first time to a fashion show and I loved it all.  I wanted it all.  plus they served yummy hors d'oerves and this cocktail named the "fashionista".  muddled cucumber with vodka, fresh lime juice, agave nectar, and a splash of soda.  it was so delicious.

then I found this hat, that I definitely think I must have.  except then I need to find the rest of the outfit to go with it.

I pinned an outfit similar to this on pinterest.  this was my best attempt at imitating it.  don't you wish you could have your "pinterest closet" as your real closest.  seriously.

blazer - Zara
tank - oldie from banana
jeans - Vioss from Nordstrom Rack
shoes - Cole Haan
necklaces - Lucia K. Faye Knotted Ball and Blake Painted Chain

what's your story

a while back we launched our monogram collection.  the best part is learning all the stories behind each of these pieces of jewelry.  celebrations of life lived and lost, of loved ones so very cherished, of goals met and being pursued.  so inspiring to be a part of all these women's stories.

one such story belongs to my dear dear friend Lecia.  We met in college and have walked through so many major life events together.

surprising her, bright and early, on her birthday {probably like 10am}

this picture totally captures this moment so well.  Lecia is cool and collected, I am TRYING to be as we pose next to my major-crush-whom-I-can't-even-bring-myself-to-get-close-to-I'm-so-nervous-now-husband.  and yes we are seniors in college {not high school}.

coffee date with auntie Leesh

Lecia is the reason behind the vintage pink bead in the monogram collection.  among many things - a lover of vintage, magazine journalist, total goofball, fashionista, loyal friend, she is a survivor of breast cancer and a huge inspiration to my life.  I vividly remember getting her call and the news.

this is {a small part of} her story,

I was as healthy as one could be at 26 years old-- I pirouetted my way through at least 10 hours of ballet a week and precisely chose from a vegetarian menu both at restaurants and at home. While browsing for a birthday gift in-between film auditions on the 3rd street promenade in Santa Monica, California, my 1960’s pink and yellow sundress kept catching the breeze off the Pacific not two blocks away. Desperately trying to gain control of my skirt’s desire to fly, I wasn’t able to find my cell until after the third ring. A call from a doctor who had just promised me the day before that the lump I felt in my breast would turn out to be nothing more than a cyst. After all, I was young…and free from family history.

The conversation was one-sided. He spoke; I half listened as giggling girls with their lattes looped around me to get to their next shopping destination. All I heard my doctor say was that I had breast cancer, it was aggressive and surgery was urgent. Anything else he uttered hit deaf ears which caused me to click “end call” before he could wish me luck I obviously didn‘t have.

Within a couple of days I was living with family friends in the bay area. My brain felt like it had been held up to an ice pack for hours. Numb and unfeeling. Entering surgery had me neither frightened nor anxious. It just was something that was happening to someone who bore a chilling resemblance to me. Nothing was real. From the moment I was given the diagnosis to the moment I woke up to a crying surgeon that told me I had cancerous lymph nodes and my life would be over in a year to the sessions of chemotherapy I had with my Panama-born male nurse who repeatedly asked a dying girl out to dinner to the sight of a trash can filled with my lost hair to the mornings of radiation where my skin was being barbequed. Nothing about it seemed real until it was over…and I was still alive.

Somehow through experimental drugs, the love of family and friends, the mercy of God and the choice to explore avenues of myself that I hadn’t previously taken time to do, I was able to keep a heart beat. I started out my new chance with a craving for knowledge and adventure--went back to school, became a UCLA graduate, explored Europe, Africa and South America and fascinated myself with the cultures of each. Eventually, however, the adventure seeker who had to “live life to the fullest” and be grateful that she was alive at all times wore thin. As appreciative as I was for my life, I couldn’t continue to feel like I wasn’t allowed to be a real person with varying moods and complexities and always on display as “the girl with cancer.”  I had to find my way back to real life without losing the emotionally positive changes that had occurred within. Once I rid myself of the anxiety that I didn’t have time on my side and could relax into being me with goals for a future, my life developed into an existence covered in peace. Because of the cancer I went through, I was able to open myself up to the unexpected. A willingness to jump at opportunities or take paths that were not part of a prior plan lead me into an unforeseen career as a writer. For this change in perspective and for the excitement I now have in what awaits me, I will always be grateful for cancer.

for the month of October, we will donate 5$ for each piece of monogram collection jewelry purchased to breast cancer research.  or if you want to do more, you can donate here.

also - do your self-breast exams, Lecia was 26 when she found her lump.  here is a great reference for the correct way, you can even sign up for monthly reminders.

happy monday.

best,
kirsty
