Some Days You Just Gotta Get It Done.

This is my get it done mom outfit for fall.

So I sit here trying to come up with something witty and new to say about this flannel shirt.  Cozy and layerable, it's the quintessential PNW piece when the days get gray.  And why shouldn't it be?  The updated blue and red plaid give this shirt a fresh bright look, but it's still the classic you reach for when presented with a day in the elements.  It keeps you warm and comfy and paired with great denim it's PNW classic chic.

So no whit needed.

I love layering a henley underneath with exaggerated cuffs.  And I pretty much live in these rain boots.  Rainclouds enter - goodbye suede hello rubber.

For sure the coolest piece about this outfit though is the bag.  I can honestly say for once it's all about the bag.  I feel a little bit badass, carrying this as my mom bag throughout my day.

This bag was born from a vision that Filson had when they realized that the bags they replace through their lifetime guarantee can have a new life.  FDR specialists in the Seattle flagship store start by taking these returned bags apart by the seams and repairing all aging and damaged parts.  Then the bag is put back together, often using uniquely found pieces including drop cloths, tin cloth from pants and cast off leather pieces from other projects.  These bags are original works of art that tell a story.  Which is of course my favorite part.

If you visit the Seattle flagship store you can watch these specialists in action.  Many of these designs and pieces are only found in the Seattle store.

Mom Jeans, Plaid, and Platforms.

#moveinmavi

High waisted jeans and plaid for spring, this is Northwest at it's best.  The day didn't start out with a torrential downpour but we ended up in one, taking shelter under the overhang of a coffee shop.  And warding of our chills with hot velvety coffee.  Fitting as this may be since my shirt is from Filson's spring line - I prefer urban mom rather than outdoor enthusiast.

Of course I love the outdoors, but only if I have the right shoes.

Honestly though, Filson got it right with this shirt.  The fit is slim, with an slightly longer length, in the softest lightweight cotton twill.   And I love the orange and cream plaid print.  When Filson set out to create their women's line - they paid great interest to the fit and detail of their designs, creating pieces that are truly feminine and absolutely classic.

This shirt is perfect tucked into some high waisted mom jeans, but I will also be reaching for it in the summer as a perfect light layer over shorts and a tank to ward of chilly evenings, and then of course come fall and winter, it's a no brainer.

This is a piece that is only going to get better with age.  Like me.

Cropped Flares for Fall

how to style cropped jeans for fall

Doesn't it seem like cropped flares were just getting warmed up this summer.   Well I think they have major staying power for fall, and as long as the weather stays warm enough to bare a little ankle they will be in my regular rotation.  I love them with booties or work boots, and especially with this spin on a hiking boot, with a little bit of wedge in the back, that I have fallen for.  Obviously for city life not for nature.

Who cares if I'm going hiking I just really want to look the part.  Sort of.

These jeans were actually flares I have had for years, they were called flip-flop length.  Which in theory who doesn't love summers quintessential sandal, but in execution it was a very poor showing.  They were the perfect candidate to be snipped.

And I love them.

I took the hem up to a subtle point in the back.  I am also loving the hi-low hem that I have been seeing.  Have an old pair of flares in your closet?   Snip them!

So don't think of cropped denim as only a summer pant, this flattering silhouette is perfect for fall's flannels and chunky sweaters.

I also like to add gold jewelry, like these necklaces, to flannel, denim and boots.  It's sort of unexpected but I love the femininity and fanciness it adds.  I mean just in case you might have wondered if I was going hiking.  Hey, I don't have anything against hiking, for everyone else it's fantastic.

Happy Furday! No Fear, For Real, Just Faux.

how to wear denim culottes in winter

faux fur vest

hooded fur vest

Well the first time - Oh my I can't beeeeelieve I am linking to that blog post - I fell for faux fur, I had no idea the longevity it would have.  And now look at me, my entire household has exclaimed I look like an Ewok and I love it.

I'm here to say, just do it.  It's so fun.  And not over the top, and you will find yourself so soft, warm, and fuzzy.

I'd love to hear an argument on why you can't do faux fur.  Unless you just don't want to.  Can't argue with that.  Like my friend who doesn't like nuts with her chocolate.  What in the world.

Or my other friend who thinks she can't wear leopard print, yet is one of the hippest gals I know.  Doesn't look good.  Not a clue on that one.

Or that certain someone who won't eat any fruit.  Like any.  I can't even.

Back to the point.  A great way to start is just a vest, a jacket might make you feel too gorilla chic, I get it.  But again my love for vests, this is easy.  It's versatile, you can wear with errrrthing.  Sweaters, t-shirts, even pair it over a jean jacket.  With jeans, dresses, maxi skirts.  Leggings and boots, track pants, even a great pair of sweats.

This outfit makes me so happy.  Something about buffalo check has got me this season.  These culottes are the most comfortable jeans I currently own.  I love the high-waist style, and of course the cut, the undone hem keeps them modern.  I have even worn them with flats.  Yes you can...just you wait till summertime sandals and tanks.  And now they are on sale!

My statement piece for fall.

oversized poncho with jeans

how to layer stripes and plaid for fall

fall style

This fall has been one full of change for me, this is reflected in my wardrobe as I add more and more layers and sweaters and jackets, as I simultaneously store away my shorts and swimsuits for the fall/winter - oh my.

Can you say winter storm warning.  Careful what you wish for.

The other part of my wardrobe, and life, that is reflecting change is the need to be more budget conscience.  But just because I am on a tighter clothing budget, I don't want to lose the life in my wardrobe.

I still want fun pieces that make me happy that are also functional that I can wear in a multitude of ways.  And this is possible people.  One such piece is the poncho that I have been wearing almost everyday.

And now it just so happens to be on major sale in black, or in gray.  (and so are the clogs, can't forget those babies)

What I wanted to show here was that this poncho doesn't just have to be worn only with solid colors, you can treat this gray stripe as a neutral.  I even wore it on the airplane with a tee, track pants, and sneakers.  Bonus:  blanket for your airplane nap.  If you're that lucky.

When you are drawn to a piece but think it's possibilities are too limited, think outside the box a little...can you treat it as a neutral, or wear it with complimentary colors, can it serve multiple functions in your closet, does it have the ability to be dressed up or down...

Fall is for Flannel

flannel shirt and skinny jeans

Hello Monday and hot coffee.

Well for part of the country at least, fall is slowly settling in, days are getting more crisp and nights are chilly, but the sun is still mostly shining.  This is the time of year when you need sun screen and an umbrella, and maybe a scarf...and flip flops...

Honestly though, fall is my very favorite season, and albeit that I am totally freezing in this mild fall weather, I am excited to welcome back my autumn friends on a more regular basis.  Really that whole conspiracy about your blood thinning, I believe it.

One of my favorite autumn pieces is flannel shirts.  They are sort of perfect for fall.

Lightweight enough to layer under sweaters and jackets, yet warm enough to ward off the chill on their own.  Awesome plaid color combinations and styles.  Crazy comfortable, dare I say pajama level.  Stylish with everything.  Hello I have on metallic oxfords and I love the combo.

You can find flannel everywhere right now.
